Ideology, diplomacy and the well-being of the people
By Pablo Gabriel Miraglia
The influence of ideology in international relations can be a determining factor in the configuration of policies, alliances and conflicts between nations. Throughout history, different political, economic and social ideologies have played a crucial role in global decision-making, directly impacting the living conditions of citizens. Ideological pettiness in international relations can have unfortunate consequences for the well-being of people, as it prevents effective cooperation between nations and can exacerbate existing conflicts. When narrow-mindedness and a lack of openness to different perspectives dominate international decision-making, it risks perpetuating divisions and undermining efforts to address global challenges collaboratively.
On many occasions, ideology has intruded into international relations by influencing the formulation of foreign policies of states. Governments that share similar ideologies tend to collaborate and form alliances, while those with ideological differences can clash and generate tensions. This phenomenon has led to the creation of ideological blocs and strategic alliances that have affected global dynamics and the distribution of power. Ideological pettiness can manifest itself in an unwillingness to engage with other nations that have different political or economic perspectives. This lack of dialogue and mutual understanding can lead to diplomatic tensions, trade conflicts and ultimately adversely affect international stability. The inability to overcome ideological differences can block opportunities to address pressing issues such as climate change, poverty or global health
A clear example of this is when ideological agendas prevail over cooperation on humanitarian issues, political disputes can lead to blockages in international aid, preventing crucial assistance to populations affected by conflict, natural disasters or humanitarian crises. The lack of solidarity can leave disadvantaged communities without the support necessary to rebuild and improve their living conditions. In addition, they can have a negative impact on the economic sphere. The imposition of unilateral sanctions based on ideological differences can harm the economies of the affected countries, directly affecting the population through loss of jobs, scarcity of resources and a decrease in general well-being. This selfish attitude can hinder global economic cooperation and undermine the mutual benefits that could flow from more constructive interdependence.
Another clear example is that of the Cold War, where the ideologies of communism and capitalism played a central role in the division of the world into two blocs led by the Soviet Union and the United States, respectively. This ideological confrontation not only had military implications, but also affected the well-being of the citizens of many countries, who were caught in armed conflicts, geopolitical tensions and struggles for ideological supremacy.
The imposition of ideologies has also had significant impacts in the economic sphere. Economic policies based on specific ideologies have influenced the distribution of wealth, social equity and access to basic services in different parts of the world. These policies can have direct consequences on the well-being of the population, since they determine the way in which issues such as education, health and employment are addressed
On the other hand, ideology can also interfere in matters related to human rights and democracy. Governments with certain ideologies can justify authoritarian practices or violations of fundamental rights in the name of their ideological principles. This can have a negative impact on individual freedom, civic participation, and people's ability to determine their own destiny. Likewise, it can lead to the instrumentalization of conflicts for internal political purposes. Leaders can take advantage of ideological differences to divert attention from internal problems, creating external enemies and exacerbating social polarization. This strategy, although it may be effective in the short term in consolidating internal power, often has negative long-term consequences in terms of regional stability and social well-being.
In summary, the intrusion of ideology in international relations can have broad implications for the well-being of people. When ideological pettiness intrudes into international relations, the well-being of the people is compromised. Lack of collaboration, blocking humanitarian aid and imposing unilateral measures can exacerbate existing problems and create new challenges, from armed conflict to economic decisions and human rights issues.
Ideology plays a critical role in how states interact with each other and how these interactions affect people globally. Therefore, it is crucial to analyze and understand the impact of ideology on international relations to effectively address challenges and seek solutions that promote more equitable and sustainable well-being. Overcoming ideological pettiness requires a broader approach, based on dialogue, mutual understanding and recognition of the interconnectedness of global problems. Only through cooperation and openness to diverse perspectives can we move towards a more just and prosperous world for all.
